How To Go Viral On Pinterest

How To Go Viral On Pinterest

Spread the love

Let me walk you through how one blog post changed everything for me: 350,000 shares, millions of views, and over $150,000 in revenue—from a single piece of content on Pinterest.

Here’s the proof that it happened:

Why Pinterest Deserves Your Attention

If you run a blog and rely on ad revenue, digital products, or affiliate links, Pinterest is an absolute goldmine.

Unlike Facebook, Pinterest still gives creators a shot at massive free exposure. The platform isn’t overly saturated with ads, which means your content can still go viral—if you know how to play the game.

That’s what this post is all about: teaching you how to create content that goes viral on Pinterest.

What You Should Know About the Pinterest Algorithm

Before I show you the post that went viral, I want to be honest.

Yes, it exploded in 2018. But Pinterest, like every major platform, constantly updates its algorithm. What worked then might not work today—unless your strategies are solid.

Luckily, I’ve continued to get viral traction using the same core techniques. The tactics I’ll share still work, even as the algorithm evolves. They’ve helped me drive traffic, build email lists, and sell digital products on autopilot.

The Pinterest algorithm rewards high-quality content, standout visuals, and consistency. Focus on these, and you’ll get results.

If you want thousands (or even millions) of free views—whether for your own blog or a client’s—you’ll want to keep reading.

What To Expect When You Go Viral

Going viral is exciting, but it’s also nerve-wracking. Here’s what to prepare for:

  • It’s scary. Even after years of blogging and hundreds of posts, hitting “publish” still makes me nervous. But it gets easier—and more rewarding—the more you do it.
  • Your family might not “get it.” I’ll never forget the look my wife gave me (while pregnant) when I told her I wanted to blog full-time. But I’ll also never forget the look on her face when I made $1,000 in a single day. That post made her a believer. My parents? Still confused.
  • People will surprise you. Even family and friends who don’t understand online business will be supportive when they see your success. You’ll start hearing from readers around the world thanking you for your content.
  • You’ll feel unstoppable. Once you get a taste of Pinterest traction, it’s addicting. You’ll want to post every day.
  • But not everything will go viral. Even with a proven strategy, some posts won’t hit. That’s normal. Stay consistent.

Going Viral Doesn’t Require a Huge Following

This is one of the best things about Pinterest—you don’t need a massive audience.

When my post took off, I had just 15,000 followers. Pinterest isn’t like Instagram or Facebook. Your reach isn’t limited to your follower count.

That’s why Pinterest is such a powerful tool for small creators: you can compete with the big brands if you post high-quality, valuable content consistently.

What Makes Content Go Viral on Pinterest?

I call this the “Anatomy of Viral Content.” Whether you’re blogging, creating pins, or uploading videos, viral content usually checks these boxes:

  • Well-researched: Always start with what your audience wants—what problems they’re facing and what solutions they’re searching for.
  • Keyword optimized: Your content should match what your headline promises. Be clear and honest with your titles.
  • Value-packed: Value looks different depending on your niche—education, inspiration, humor, or practical how-tos. Know what your audience considers valuable.
  • Easy to read: Use simple, clear language. Format your posts so they’re skimmable and digestible.
  • Clean and professional: Grammar, spelling, and formatting matter. Edit your work—or have someone else do it.
  • Concise and focused: Don’t ramble. Stay on topic and get to the point.
  • Emotionally engaging: Use storytelling. Make people laugh, cry, or nod their heads in agreement. The more emotion you stir up, the more likely they are to share.
  • Visually appealing: Great design matters—especially on Pinterest. Embed relevant images, use good lighting in videos, and format your blog posts to look polished.
  • Relatable and personal: Share stories from your own life. Let people see the human behind the content.
  • Solution-oriented: Help your audience solve real problems or reach real goals.
  • Authentic: Be real. People can sniff out fakes. Focus on being helpful first—money will follow.
  • Targeted: Know your niche. Tailor your content specifically to your readers’ needs and interests.

How To Create Content Pinterest Loves

I’ll go into more detail in future videos, but here’s a breakdown of my 5-step method for creating viral content:

1. Do Effective Research

Start by identifying popular topics using keyword research. Tools like Google Search, Pinterest search bar, and BuzzSumo can help.

If you don’t know much about a topic yet, learn it first. Then share what you’ve learned with your audience.

2. Write a Strong Headline and Hook

Your title should grab attention. Your hook should convince them to keep reading or watching. This is especially true on Pinterest, where you only get a second to stand out.

3. Deliver the Content

Whether writing a post or filming a video, deliver on the promise in your headline. Don’t bait-and-switch your audience.

4. Edit and Polish

Review everything before publishing. Fix grammar, cut fluff, format for readability, and make sure your visuals are on point.

5. Optimize for Traffic and Conversions

Use keywords naturally throughout. Add calls to action—whether it’s sharing, signing up, or clicking a product link. This helps boost monetization and engagement.

Example: The Pin Hacking List Post

This style works incredibly well for Pinterest. Here’s how you can use it to drive shares and traffic without writing tons of original content.

Take a look at this list post from my site Upgraded Health:
Keto Meal Plan for Beginners
It has 132,000 shares and over $100K in sales.

Or this one from Cushy Spa:
Keto Meal Prep Ideas
It received 83,000 Pinterest shares.

These posts aggregate helpful content from other sources, include summaries, links, and visuals—and still perform like crazy.

Here’s how to create your own:

Step 1: Pick a Hot Topic

Look at your own most-shared posts in Google Analytics (Social Landing Pages report), or use BuzzSumo to analyze a competitor’s top-shared content.

Find a trending topic—like “braided hairstyles” instead of just “hairstyles.”

Step 2: Find High-Performing Content

Search BuzzSumo using your chosen topic in quotes. Find blog posts, videos, or tutorials with high engagement.

Save links, headlines, and visuals for 10–20 of the best ones.

Step 3: Craft a Killer Headline

Use these formulas:

  • “X Ways To [Do Something] Without [Pain Point]”
  • “X [Things] That Will Help You [Achieve Goal]”
  • “X Ideas That Will [Benefit] Your Life”

Example: “31 Keto Dinners You Can Make in 20 Minutes or Less”

Step 4: Build the List Post

Each item should include:

  • headline for the tip
  • short summary of what the original content covers
  • An image (with permission or attribution)
  • link back to the original content

Wrap up the post with a simple CTA—ask them to share, comment, download a lead magnet, or check out your program.

Does This Strategy Really Work?

Absolutely.

I’ve used it over 20 times in the health and weight loss niche alone. Two of those posts generated over $100K each—and a third one’s catching up fast.

Here’s what I’ve made since 2018 from digital product sales:

INSERT GRAPHIC

Most of those sales came from free Pinterest traffic.

You don’t need millions of followers—you need great content that solves problems and is easy to share.

So go get started.

And welcome to the world of being a Pinpreneur.
